¡Hola! My name is Gabriela Barzallo
I am an Ecuadorian-American bilingual journalist, documentary producer, consultant and media entrepreneur based between New York City and Latin America.
I was born and raised in Ecuador and moved to the U.S. to pursue my dream of becoming a journalist—a path made possible by my immigrant mother.
I graduated from NYU with a BA in Media, Culture, and Communication and specialize in stories that bridge Latin America and the United States.
From New York to Brazil, Ecuador, Mexico, Colombia, and deep into the Amazon rainforest, journalism has taken me across borders. My reporting focuses on human rights, environmental justice, immigration, and inter-American politics, bringing underreported voices to the forefront.
My work is published in The Guardian, Al Jazeera, AJ+, BBC Future, El País, and more, where I explore these issues through in-depth storytelling and investigative reporting.
The depth of my international reporting has been made possible by the support of fellowships and awards that have helped me grow as a journalist and expand my global network. I am grateful to have been recognized by:
Beyond reporting, I’ve also shared my experience in journalism and storytelling, speaking at international events and training journalists on new ways to report the stories that matter.
Speaker at Zarelia Feminist Journalism in Latin America Festival – Quito, Ecuador (September 2024)

But beyond working with organizations, I’m also building something of my own…
After graduating from the Google News Initiative Entrepreneur Program and the Craig Newmark Journalism School Creators Program, I am building LAT MEDIA, a digital media startup and production company connecting Latin America to its U.S diasporas.
It’s a work in progress, and I’m looking for partners who believe in the power of storytelling to help bring this vision to life.
